A lil action..
April 21, 2008 by Jeremy Thorns (Snowboarder)
So three weeks ago I headed west, the car was packed with a crap load of study and of course my trusty wakeskate. The first week was so amazing just absolutely perfect weather every day -no wind and warm. The lake was still quite bearable then – I was still riding in just boardies.
Then I came home for a few days to see my friends who had just got home from Europe and go the Grad ball. After attempting to party to the worst music ever at the grad ball (Britney, Spice girls etc) it was time to get back on the board.
The first week I pretty much devoted to riding wake to wake behind our mastercraft x2 as our inflattable was in getting a new cover. I was stoked to learn toeside frontside 180’s wake to wake (got the grab once) and just get way more comfortable riding wake to wake as it isn’t something I have done a lot of. I’m working on backside 1’s wake to wake – will be so stoked if I get that trick.
Once we had the little boat back I got back into that groove a little too. The third week of the holidays was definitely getting colder and neoprene was a must on at least some parts of the body. We had Benny Comber stay that week – he was progressing super quick as always.
Then the crew from Blenheim came down Wednesday. Oh yeah we were filming heaps the middle week and that only sped up when the crew got bigger. Riley did some crazy tricks inside out over the 5knot start boys at Brunner. For anyone who hasn’t seen them they are damn high and Riley stomped a front 3 first pop then came back with a back one landing wrapped straight after – madness.
Guy Robinson was tearing the bag too with some huge tricks into the flats after watching Lymans new section in Push Process- the new Oakley video which is awesome and even has a couple of shots of MD ambassador Brad Smeele. So hopefully we will edit up all the footage soon and I will upload the video – I got most of my stuff on film that week which was pretty satisfying- not all that clean but I can work on that.
The last Saturday of my holidays we got up super early – before 6 and headed down to Lake Kaniere for the Wakeboard South Islands. It was another near perfect day. The wake was great with Malibu and Carl Crowe supplying a VLX and a VTX. Carona and Mountain Dew supplied the refreshments.
All the divisions were pretty hotly contested. Katrina Pollard and Flick Blackmore battled it out for Open Womenswith Flick capitalising on Katrina going down. Guy Robinson took out Junior mens by a whisker over Michael Parks who killed it off the wake after coming back from a week riding rails on the sunshine coast. But the biggest news of the day had to be in open mens – the top two positions were largely predictible with Riley Bathurst just narrowly going down to a resurgent Tony Evans. However everybody assumed that Dave Stubbs from Blenheim would keep his qualifying place of third. Dave came out on fire with his first few tricks including a perfect Toesdide mute Ole 5. But then he went down twice before the end of the pass. This left the door open for the guys stepping it up and competing in Open and Junior mens. Benny Comber threw down a killer run including a bat wing and a backside 3 to edge out Guy Robinson who went down on his switch heel 5 and David Evans who went down on a toeside5 and a toe back.
A good night followed and we managed to get everyone back to Brunner including a rather intoxicated Benny Comber who was celebrating three trophies, 3rd in Junior mens, 3rd in Open men, and the Murray Evans memorial cup for the best place new comer to open mens.
Sunday sucked as it was raining heaps and we had to pack up and leave the house we had rented for the whole summer. Still managed to get a ride on the way home – man I am so close to frontside big spins – have to get that next time I ride. Which wont be this weekend as I am so bogged down with work at Uni. But yeah will be on the lake for some time to come. Peace Timmy B!
So anyways, along with mountain dew I ride for a few other shredding companies, a couple of them are colony bmx and burgerfuel (yes, burgerfuel free burgers kick ass!!). We came up with a zany idea, to get a custom colony frame painted up like one of the burgerfuel cars and here’s the result!! pretty kick ass eh!!!?? still haven’t finished putting the final touches on it, missing a few new parts and a couple more stickers, but overall it’s pretty swweeettt!! I’m stoked to say the least!!!! bbllaaattt!! def a thumbs up!!!
In the quarter final round of the Wake Games I was in a heat with heavy hitters; Adam Errington, JD Webb, Randy (the Vandal) harris and Robby Carter. I rode really well having only one unfortunate fall off the wake, but I have found my weak point… Rails! I need to do some serious work on my rail riding as I had a couple of stupid falls on the rails.I did not make it through and had to spend the rest of the weekend watching from the bank.
The qualifying rounds were on at the Wake Games yesterday, I was in the third heat with some other really good riders including Nick Davies (who can do 1080s on cable) Mike Marsh (first person ever to do a heelside 900 off the wake) as well as Oliver Derome and Veteran Zane Schwenk.I had a good ride starting with a pete rose followed by a nuclear glide to fakie, hit the transfer box and threw down a melon toeside 720 and crammed in a whirly.Second pass consisted of a batwing to blind and a whirly 5 and I fell on a toeside 900. I won my heat and have advanced into the quarter finals starting tomorrow.i will check back in with results.Peace
So after only a couple of rides back in Orlando I managed to put a nice crack in my board trying a 1080, then kept riding and not long after I broke my base plate of my binding on a switch toeside backside 180.No stress tho because Ronix had already sent me two new board and a new set of bindings so was back riding the next day.
Hey,
So I packed up all my gears and made the move down south yesterday from Christchurch to Wanaka. The drive down was sweet and I made it in at about 5pm. First stop was the local curry in a hurry joint right in town…. epic!
Today was playing catchup on a few things and saying hi to all the locals around the town.
The house search is now on……………
Holler
Congrats to Kristian Philipp who claimed Bronze in the Ultimate Boarder comp. Mad props to that!!! Check out the web site and see some of the big names he was up against!!! Yeah BOY! chur
Sup,
So I’m feeling kinda lucky after some events in the past week… After finishing work early due to bad weather I got home and my boys Norm and Rosco were keen to go for a surf.
We packed the wetties, board and dog into the car and drove out to main break at Margaret River. Instead of our usual mish of driving around for ages checking all the spots we just got our wetties on and paddled out.
We’d been out for about 30 mins and we could see a stormy looking cloud brewing out to sea. Just after that came the thunder but it still seemed a ways off. The waves were pretty fun and the crowd wasn’t too bad so we carried on surfing. It wasn’t until the stormy cloud unleashed on us that we decided to paddle in. It was the most intense lightning that I’ve ever seen and we were lying out in the water and it was raining so hard that I couldn’t even open my eyes.
Everyone started paddling in as it didn’t look as though it was going to get any better. We got to the beach and ran up to the car where the dog was running around in circles and freaking out because of the lightning. We thought it was pretty funny until a bolt of lightning struck the ground not too far from us…Norm who was hanging onto the car got a shock into his hand and we all dropped to the ground freaking out.
With the air all static around us we jumped in the car and made our way from home. No time to get changed out of our wetties we were steaming up the inside of the car. With Rosco driving, Norm in the front and me in the back with the dog we pulled up behind a car that was turning right and had stopped in the middle of the road for oncoming traffic.
As Rosco edged to the left to go around the car I looked behind us to see some headlights coming up pretty quick. I tried to tell Rosco to stop but just kinda stuttered a bit then next thing there is a Hilux Surf boosting about 2.5 meters up a tree next to us then rolling off the side and up against our car. We were just like “what the f—!!” Got out to help and assisted 3 brazilians out of the wag. One dude had blood pissing out of his nose but that was about it.
In short…stopped traffic, dragged truck away from trees, rolled truck back onto wheels, waited for cops, got our time wasted by cops and then got to go home and finally get out of our wetsuits. So after dodging lightning and rolling cars we decided to chill out and down a few brews!
Just a lil story for ya. Lotto ticket I think…30 million this week!!! Yeow!
