350 International Day of Climate Action

daisy-thomas-profile-clear-70-newAttention all Canterbury Surfers and ocean lovers!!

Leroy Rust from Dunedin is organising a 350 event that will bring the full spectrum of Dunedin surfers together and we want to achieve that here in Christchurch too.

350 is the number, in parts per million, that has been deemed and agreed upon by 97% of the world’s leading scientist as the upper most limit of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, for a sustainable, safe life on earth.  Unfortunately we are currently sitting on 389 parts per million, and rising!!

October 24th 2009 is the international day of climate action. This is our final opportunity to force our leaders to pay attention to these figures, so that when they meet at the final World Leaders Climate Change Conference in December they will take up strong policies to put the world on track for 350ppm.

Us as surfers have a great involvement with Mother Nature. We immerse ourselves in the Ocean everyday, which covers approximately 71% of the earth’s surface and gives us so much fun! If we take the time out to give back to our playground and it’s surroundings and be a part of spreading awareness and building momentum, to combat the low ambitions our New Zealand government has set to take to the World Leaders Climate Change Conference this coming November.

As organisers in Dunedin we hope to gather all you keen surfers out there to attend a paddle out.

On this day of action, the goal is to bring the community together, as we have for centuries on significant and important occasions. The turn out doesn’t have to be huge, although it would be great if you all could come along, and invite your friends to do so too. It will be a monumental event and if we don’t face up to some of these challenges we are expected to lose up to 60% of our beloved coral reefs by 2030!!

We will continue to see far more radical relocations of the coastline, 2030 is not far away, if you feel like it wont be in your lifetime then think about your kids, grandkids, grandkids kids and so on and so on, It’s worth giving it a crack don’t you think?
