So three weeks ago I headed west, the car was packed with a crap load of study and of course my trusty wakeskate. The first week was so amazing just absolutely perfect weather every day -no wind and warm. The lake was still quite bearable then – I was still riding in just boardies.
Then I came home for a few days to see my friends who had just got home from Europe and go the Grad ball. After attempting to party to the worst music ever at the grad ball (Britney, Spice girls etc) it was time to get back on the board.
The first week I pretty much devoted to riding wake to wake behind our mastercraft x2 as our inflattable was in getting a new cover. I was stoked to learn toeside frontside 180′s wake to wake (got the grab once) and just get way more comfortable riding wake to wake as it isn’t something I have done a lot of. I’m working on backside 1′s wake to wake – will be so stoked if I get that trick.
Once we had the little boat back I got back into that groove a little too. The third week of the holidays was definitely getting colder and neoprene was a must on at least some parts of the body. We had Benny Comber stay that week – he was progressing super quick as always.
Then the crew from Blenheim came down Wednesday. Oh yeah we were filming heaps the middle week and that only sped up when the crew got bigger. Riley did some crazy tricks inside out over the 5knot start boys at Brunner. For anyone who hasn’t seen them they are damn high and Riley stomped a front 3 first pop then came back with a back one landing wrapped straight after – madness.
Guy Robinson was tearing the bag too with some huge tricks into the flats after watching Lymans new section in Push Process- the new Oakley video which is awesome and even has a couple of shots of MD ambassador Brad Smeele. So hopefully we will edit up all the footage soon and I will upload the video – I got most of my stuff on film that week which was pretty satisfying- not all that clean but I can work on that.
The last Saturday of my holidays we got up super early – before 6 and headed down to Lake Kaniere for the Wakeboard South Islands. It was another near perfect day. The wake was great with Malibu and Carl Crowe supplying a VLX and a VTX. Carona and Mountain Dew supplied the refreshments.
All the divisions were pretty hotly contested. Katrina Pollard and Flick Blackmore battled it out for Open Womenswith Flick capitalising on Katrina going down. Guy Robinson took out Junior mens by a whisker over Michael Parks who killed it off the wake after coming back from a week riding rails on the sunshine coast. But the biggest news of the day had to be in open mens – the top two positions were largely predictible with Riley Bathurst just narrowly going down to a resurgent Tony Evans. However everybody assumed that Dave Stubbs from Blenheim would keep his qualifying place of third. Dave came out on fire with his first few tricks including a perfect Toesdide mute Ole 5. But then he went down twice before the end of the pass. This left the door open for the guys stepping it up and competing in Open and Junior mens. Benny Comber threw down a killer run including a bat wing and a backside 3 to edge out Guy Robinson who went down on his switch heel 5 and David Evans who went down on a toeside5 and a toe back.
A good night followed and we managed to get everyone back to Brunner including a rather intoxicated Benny Comber who was celebrating three trophies, 3rd in Junior mens, 3rd in Open men, and the Murray Evans memorial cup for the best place new comer to open mens.
Sunday sucked as it was raining heaps and we had to pack up and leave the house we had rented for the whole summer. Still managed to get a ride on the way home – man I am so close to frontside big spins – have to get that next time I ride. Which wont be this weekend as I am so bogged down with work at Uni. But yeah will be on the lake for some time to come. Peace Timmy B!
