mammoth snowfalls

So last week I woke up on Thursday morning after riding Tuesday at Heavenly and Wednesday at Sierra and decided it was time for a change of scenery. So Bevan, Mez and I hired a car and made the 3 hour drive south to Mammoth. It turned out to be a great move as we arrived to the very unfamiliar sight of snow dumping down in the town. We had a few drinks and headed to bed. We woke on the Saturday morning to 10inches of fresh and it was still dumping. We had an amazing day riding trees, ollieing anything in sight including many trees and stalling on some of the larger stumps and logs. We were drenched by the end of the day but we had ridden all over the mountain – checked out the parks – they were super fun; amazing jumps and some unique rails including some large pipes to both hit as down rails and as stalls and a million other items of varying size and shape. We only took a couple of runs out of the pow to check them out but the jump line in the south park was heaps of fun – they were an amazing shape; 4 jumps in a row and the speed was just so easy to guess I never missed a sweet spot the whole time. The main park jumps werena??t really an option due to the fact it was still dumping. We were soaked through by the end of the day but had heaps of fun shredding with new friends and catching up with some old ones.

Day2 in mammoth was a unique one I rode solo most of the day as the others werena??t prepared to battle the storm that was dumping down on the mountain. Mammoth really needed the snow so no one was complaining but it was rather wet I must say and the wind made for a really cold day – luckily I had popped in to the office and picked up some cool new Grenade gloves the previous day as I had left mine in Tahoe. But yeah rode really deep powder that was a little heavy and got drenched through to the bone, literally the wettest I have ever been on a ski field. I checked the report the following morning and they had received 30inches throughout the day – I am sure that most of that was absorbed into my puffer jacket and pants.

With the forecast similar for the next day we headed back to Tahoe stopping in Carson on the way for Taco Bell and of course the mandatory Mountain Dew Code Red. So Sunday was a fun powder day for me – Bevan decided to compete in a USASA comp which was fun for him as he ended up winning the Pro Men Division – I kind of wish I had done it but I leave here in just over a week and the main draw card for the event was qualifying for Nationals which I am not here for but that left the morning open to go shred powder and that was an awesome first powder day in Tahoe – good times, got to hit a rather large jump off a rock with about a 35ft gap to the landing – good fun but scary for sure with the bumpiest run in I have hit in a while. Got to drop a bunch of cliffs I had been eying up for the last month and was beginning to think I wouldna??t get to hit at all.

Monday and Tuesday were both really fun days for me at Sierra but ended a little bitter with me breaking edges both days. I broke my edge doing a frontboard some way on a downrail – I just spun round a little too early and hit the nose in. Then today I was riding my friends board loving life on the new jump line that Sierra has, stomping a bunch of stalefish frontside sevens which I had learnt the day before and I tried to get switch back 5 tail grab frontside seven in a line but couldna??t quite get the tail front seven hopefully I will learn those and frontside 9′s tomorrow. Anyway at about 3:50 when a bunch of the park features were already shut I hit the tail of my board doing a frontboard pretzel on the stair feature down rail – so gutted another $20 down the drain but oh well. Tomorrow I will ride my big board and stay away from the evil edge breaking rails and hit a bunch of powder and trees which we sessioned today. I think on Friday and during the weekend the plan is to go get some photos.

So one week of riding left and I have a bunch of tricks that I still want to learn but I am stoked with how everything has gone so far

Righty o team until next time, have fun wherever you are in the world, I certainly will be in Tahoe then Ia??ll be back home to watch the Wakeboard Nationals in Blenheim straight from the airport.
