Here we go…

So, I’m sure by now, most of NZ (and the world!) has heard about the Skate Comp that went down at Vic Park!

Argh! If you’ve been keeping up with my blogs over the past few years, I’ve written updates about the progress of the SPAG (SKATE PARK ADVISORY GROUP) of which I’m part of. We worked with the council to get  the new Skatepark at Vic Park. Long story short, after two years of constant battling, we got it! Great!

NOW! This guys Doc Murdoch decides to run a skate comp there. I know nothing of this guy, never heard of him before, but his kid skates. I see the flyers up all over the skatepark, looks like a usual skate comp, sponsors, prize money, but kinda weird that it’s only for groms. Anyways, some pretty gnarly stuff went down on the day, and I’m not talking about the skating! Some kids got pushed off their boards by a judge, and when the judge was confronted by another skater about the incident, the guy pushed him as well. It all got ugly and was in the news etc. While all that was going on, the ENTIRE Park got covered in hideous tags, regardless of who did it, it was the organizers responsibility to make sure that this did not happen, and to clean it up. It hurt to see something we had worked for, for so long, be treated this way. The park was a mess and a disgrace.

Anyways, I could go on and on about this, but what’s the point!? It happened, the council stepped in and cleaned the park to ALMOST the way it was, and here’s hoping that this guy gets the message, no more running Skate Comps!

I was there the Monday morning and the news showed up, so did this Doc Murdoch guy…pretty frustrating…If you’ve got a spare 10 minutes take a seat and see what happens…
