SHELLY GOTLIEB (SNOWBOARDER) – Burton Open Vermont

So each year one of my favourite comps rolls around in March. The US Open is always in Stratton Vermont and its such a cool and different state I love to visit.

This year was a little different, the weather was crazy. The first day we were there an ice storm rolled in. It was like someone put a hose on all the trees and wet them, then in the same instant the water then froze. It was crazy.

crazy ice trees

This lasted for days before it all melted. When riding it looked so pretty to be looking down on the sparkling ice trees. Was cool but crazy.

The course wasn’t affected too much by the weather, it was icy but no more than usual. We had a few days of practice before semis, I had  landed a run which I though was enough to get me though. Unfortunately I was on the bubble, but ended up getting bumped out of the final 6. So ended up in 7th place after my runs, disappointed was an understatement!

To cheer me up Kelly Clark invited a few of us Burton girls to her family restaurant for dinner one night. It was so cool, its like a little museum of all Kelly’s trophy’s, medals and anything shes collected along her career (which is a lot by the way).

Trophy case bursting at the seams

Gold medal no big deal

Kelly’s parents place is called TC’s which is in a town called Dover Vermont, close to Stratton. Its awesome and cute, and a must see if your in the area, I recommend it for sure. Vermonters are super proud of Kelly and as well they should be, was awesome to see her archive of winnings. Thanks Kel :)

Ok well back to the comp, day of finals, Enni won, stoked for her but in all honesty I was still gutted about not being there myself. So, what I did to get my mind off it was… PARTY!!! That night there was a riders party. It was fun and the kiwi crew were there to get busy.

Ok well thats update from the Open, a little differnt from others, but this time this comp was a little different. After the whole Burton Open Series I ended up with a overall ranking of 4th, just missed the cut. Oh well next time huh

BRETT BAND (Skateboarder) Happy New Year, little late!

Hello everyone who will read this, I wish the best for your new year to come…and I’m sure you will make lots of money and then spend it soon after.

I have just returned from parts of Central America which have no internet, or otherwise parts with internet – where they charge $12US per hour. So being a middle – low level income type of traveller, I could not afford $12US for one hour of internet when my breakfast, lunch and dinner all add up to this number. However I will pick from the gems of my photos and give you a little trip through the depths of my highland and lowland experiences.

Basically, nothing seems different, except how I feel about living in NZ again; there’s a good chance this is because I saw grenades being thrown around.

Apart from Northern Mexico, EVERYWHERE below is full of peace, colour, food and spicier salsa’s and of course, less grenades – however probably an equal number of M-16 rifles (I’m probably not very accurate with that name) and maybe a little more machetes.

What am I up to now? I dunno “But up to Now” by Snow Patrol is pretty good. Otherwise I have just been hanging at the beach, drinking water – but very soon Mountain Dew as I need a re-stock! …and taking things easy. There are a lot of luxuries being home, one of them, is being home.

This little girl is the latest addition to the family…

____________________________________________________________

The real deal, here’s a short tour through my end of semester travel through Mex, Guatemala and Belize!

This is what it’s like going to a real back street Lucha Libre, the week before we watched females have it at each other – probably one of the best things I have seen.

Not much to say here…

Cool kids at the park

They drink Pepsi and worship chickens here…

Trekking around Puerto Vallarta

It got cold at 3000m

This really become more frequent as we moved from Southern Mexico to Guatemala. Huge ditch from land slides.

On an ancient ruin in Guatemala, 100m tall…

…these are the steps to get up, it is suuuper steep.

…and the view over other temples.

Guatemalan kids love cameras…they ask for ‘Un Quetzal’, but they don’t really mind if you don’t give it to them.

So that is a short trip through them, I will keep’em coming, more from another camera of Christmas and other times. Little annoyed because I can’t seem to find 1000 of my photos from Mexico City and around. Eek!

SHELLY GOTLIEB (SNOWBOARDER) – Did the Dew!

1st Stop Dew Tour Breckenridge …… course was great – weather was not.

Snowed all day through the semis and finals. Worse weather ever! Especially to hit big jumps, 70 foot monsters.

Anyways I did a great job of botching up my semis runs and fell both of them and ended up a disappointing 8th. But Possum killed it for the Kiwis and got into finals and ended up 5th overall. Stoked for her :)

Boys killed it, check link for the results for all:

Some you win, some you lose, Christmas time now then off to Europe, take care and eat lots a Christmas food xx

BRETT BAND – Mi primera entrada

So hola and welcome to my wee blog,

I am attempting to learn the Spanish language – Mexican Spanish to be exact, so don’t be shocked if a few words here and there sound a bit flash. Reasons for these efforts are because in two weeks (2 WEEKS!!) I am leaving the foreshores of NZ and ideally arriving across the USA/Mexican border safely into the Mexican city of Monterrey.

- It’s all very exciting as I haven’t left the country in two years and have been busy studying more than skating! Which has been a bumber (and kinda is now that I just so happen to roll my ankle two weeks before I leave) but I intend to do a lot of rolling round and checking out new spots; food joints, bars and of course skate spots!

lost the battle

My real reason for leaving is to study as an exchange student over there, it all worked out pretty swell though, go to uni for an hour a day over there then go skate? C’s get degrees right?

So if I manage to hold onto all of my items over there I may be able to show how it goes. Who knows, I may end up sending photos of me surfing black waves – a hurricane hit the Gulf of Mexico the other day and flooded Monterrey. Oilspill + hurricane = mass diarrhea

Here’s an old clip taken from my mate’s movie he made from a while back, just a few tricks I filmed in that video! Enjoy and I’ll be back pronto with something else insignificant to ramble about!
