Long time no hear… May 7, 2010 by Kirk Beyer (Surfer)

Hey guys, Sorry its been so long! I have been away too many times to count and been so busy I cant remember what day it is haha
What have I been up to lately? A bunch of everything to be honest. Was playing the drums at EC10 in Fielding over Easter which was pretty sweet.

I’ve also been surfing (sneaking out during the day) to Lyall bay on a couple of good as swells. But its been mainly the Wellington traditional howling onshore surfs at Titahi Bay for me.

Who else hates day light savings? Losing light at 6pm makes it pretty hard to get a surf ay! I think I need to invest in some spot lights so we can do this…

I’ve also been wakeboarding heaps lately ay. After watching the videos on Brad Smeele’s MD blog I realise that I’m not very good at all haha but I so enjoy doing at. Can nearly land a 360 in the air… that any good? or still a rookie?

Well theres a bit of an update, anyone been scoring those sick swells up North? I saw this shot on surf.co this morning of Raglan – hope its like this on Sunday, im up there for a wedding!

Get the new Kiwi Surf Mag January 14, 2010 by Kirk Beyer (Surfer)

This photo is of Lyall Bay cranking in one of the recent epic swells that I’ve been blogging about!

Silas Hansen is the photographer for Kiwisurf mag, he saw the swell on the swell map and flew down to find waves like this…

He did a photoshoot with Realsurf team riders Matt Stockman and Jeramy Buckley. I went on one of the photoshoots but my shortboarding wasn’t up to scratch for the mag hahaha! To see the photos and read the article on Lyall Bay and Realsurf go buy the mag from a book shop, check it out its awesome! It looks like this:

Castle point comp and Monday at Lyall Bay January 6, 2010 by Kirk Beyer (Surfer)

I didnt end up going to the Scotty and Lee Memorial Comp on the weekend because the swell looked too small. I was up bright and early ready to go but after checking the reports I made the call to bail. It was a good call too, because they had to postpone the comp until Sunday night and ran most of it on Monday (and I had to work Monday).

I can’t find the official results of the comp yet, but I will post them when I get them. I have heard that they had good waves Sunday night with a howling offshore and 2-3ft surf, but Monday was the day – they scored some epic waves for the comp on monday.

I rocked up to Realsurf to start at 8am and nearly cried!  It was one of those 4times a year epic surfs at Lyall Bay and I had to work!! I managed to get out at lunchtime and after work in the arvo, but check out these photos of the morning. Photos are taken by local surfer Shane Ives, if you were out in the morning he may have got a shot of you – email him to check greenwall@surf.co.nz  – Surfer in the photos is Realsurf worker/rider Jeramy Buckley.

Snapping boards is my specialty October 21, 2009 by Kirk Beyer (Surfer)

kirk-beyer-profile-clear-70-new1With a comp coming up this weekend and then another comp the weekend after I have been training as much as possible.

Last Monday Lyall Bay had the best surf we’ve had in a long time!  My boss at Realsurf gave me time off work to go sufing, it was offshore barrelling good tides . . . everything was perfect right up until I snapped my board!  This time it was the green one . . . so out came the shortboard, Silas the photographer from Kiwisurf mag was out there so we were all trying to get ourselves a shot in the next issue!

Lyall Bay 1

Lyall Bay 2

My shaper worked hard to fix my snapped boards, if I can make it last I should have a board for the comps. More on them soon . . .

Snapped my board! Gutted!! July 8, 2009 by Kirk Beyer (Surfer)

kirk-beyer-profile-clear-70-newLast Saturday Lyall Bay had a solid ground swell hit in the morning, when I paddled out it was well-over head and had a light offshore wind complimenting it!
I kept going for the biggest set waves I could find and was loving it!! After getting a good close-out barrell I was paddelling out and turned and went for a medium size one – I pulled in but got sucked up and over the curl, the result being this:

A COLD Southerly Surf at Lyall Bay, Wellington (with PICS) May 25, 2009 by Kirk Beyer (Surfer)

kirk-profile-clear-70Wellington has been hit with a huge Southerly storm over the last week with southerly winds gusting over 100km/h that created a big swell. What happens when these massive swells hit Lyall Bay with onshore winds is you can go out to Titahi Bay on the west coast and surf a much smaller swell that wraps around.
